I always used to wonder why Jesus remained silent when being asked questions by the Pharisees before being crucified. I could never figure out why after having so much to say previously, that he would remain silent at the greatest moment of his terrestrial life, just before being crucified. Now I know.
Have you ever wondered what God and the Angels really see when they look at us? They are able to see all of Creation while most of it is invisible to us with our human eyes. I’ve sometimes wondered what we must look like to them, you know, mind, body and spirit. The only approximation I can fathom is provided by TV programs like “Ghost Whisperer” or movies like “Hereafter” and “Ghost”. I imagine that they simultaneously see three of us (or more) at different stages of health or decay. Decay, that’s right, as in dead, rotting, decomposing, death.
The Holy Bible tells us that we have at least two bodies (some would say that the soul is yet a third) that co-exist within a single person. The “physical man” (or woman as the case may be) and the “spiritual man”.
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 (KJV).
Jesus Christ
This seems to indicate that not only do we need to feed our physical bodies in order for them to stay alive, but if we have an additional body made of spirit, then we need to feed it too. What our spiritual body needs to stay alive is spiritual nourishment or food, that food is the word of God.
So what happens to our physical bodies if we starve them? Well, in due time they die of course, they die and the spirit (possibly the soul too) is released. The “Silver Cord” is parted and the spirit’s connecting tether to the physical is severed. The stuff from which we are made that is not of this earth but is made of the eternal material of God, it returns to him. Our former home, the now dead physical body, then returns to the stuff from which it was made, the individual elements of the Earth more commonly known as dirt or “dust”.
“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:19 (KJV)
God The Father speaking to Adam
What happens though, if the spiritual man or spiritual body dies first, due to spiritual starvation, before the physical one does? Is that even possible? What would happen to a person in such a condition? What would they look like?
Sometimes when thinking about things like this, about what it must be like to see through God’s eyes, I feel so sorry for God that I could break down and cry. What a painful burden it must be to see all of his creation all at once, in infinite clarity right down to the very last quantum detail. How awful. What a profound tragedy. It reminds me of the infamous saying that goes like this;
“I like sausage but I don’t want to know how it is made.”
Just imagine for a moment that you have children (you may actually have some too). Now imagine how you would feel if after continually admonishing your child and trying to raise him or her right, one day as you stand on the porch you can only watch in abject horror as a car slowly rolls over them and crushes them to death. God has to watch that everyday and every night millions of times each day and night.
It gets worse though. Now imagine that you have a person, a human being created by God, that is not saved and therefore cannot feed their spiritual body. Eventually, if they keep rejecting food (the word of God), that person’s spiritual body wastes away until one day, it dies. But what about the person’s physical body? Does it die too, now that the spirit that used to reside in it is dead? The unimaginably horrific answer is, NO. That’s right, no, the physical body keeps on living just as before only now, there is a slumped over rotting corpse inside of them, still attached by that now decaying “Silver Cord”. The lights are on but nobody’s home. Clockwork with all the bells and whistles of a human being but there is no longer any ghost in the machine. A hollowed out shell, a robot, an automaton.
Do you understand why Jesus would not respond to this thing standing before him, being able to actually see all that was there. It would have been like us talking to a television set, the thing has a human visage and voiced thoughts with a brain like a human, but there is really nothing there. Just an echo of a person and nothing more. Jesus could see the dead spiritual body inside of this thing that was talking to him, and how repulsive a sight it must have been. Here is something so beautifully created by the greatest artist and mind of all, a masterpiece of unparalleled perfection that now stands propped up before you both denigrated and defiled. Dead, but nonetheless reanimated by something else. Something even more disgusting than this pitiful sight. Reanimated in fact, by a Demon. Like a puppeteer making a dead man dance by using strings. How awful. How terrible.
There are people walking around who for all intents and purposes, are dead. When you encounter one of these dead human beings that still has the lights on, it can be hard to tell. They look just like a person, talk just like one and can be quite intelligent and skilled, but should you press them about subjects of a spiritual nature you will discern a distinct lack of understanding and depth. Why should they, after all, be concerned with spiritual matters since they are a human being who no longer has a spirit to be concerned with? They are, after all, now only a physical entity. Spirituality is of no use to them. The spiritless person is only concerned with what he or she needs to live, the material things of this world, they have no need of spiritual anything and is simply acting in the most appropriate way for what they are, basically a creature of nature. The spiritless person is only concerned with themselves and is often Narcissistic, it is impossible for them to understand spiritual things and they should not be faulted for that. I would go so far as to say that they should not even be pitied because it would be like shedding fresh tears for a person long dead and gone, an exercise in futility and actually ridiculous.
“Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.” Matthew 7:6
As hard as this may be for some, it is wise to heed true wisdom. Above all, you are not to mistreat the spiritually dead or “spiritless” human, they are after all a person whom God gives sunshine and rain to just like you. If God sees fit to allow them their time on this Earth then you must honor that and treat them with the same reverence that you would a person now departed. Think of them simply as another part of God’s creation that was never actually meant to be. Honor his work and the remaining image of his greatness. Treat them as you would a brother or a sister gone wrong, with love but at a distance.
This leads me to my final point. While these creatures other than full human are to be respected and well treated, one must not forget that without a spirit of any kind in residence now, other more malevolent entities can insert themselves and pull the strings. I am talking about Demonic Possession. This is also the strongest reason that you as a Christian should not hang out with these people nor become involved in their lives in any deep way. I guarantee you that you will often be dealing with a malevolent demon whose only desire is to bring death and destruction down upon you. Pretty as a picture on the outside but a beast inside the heart.
Do I believe that Jesus Christ can raise someone from the dead? Of course, he did so with his friend Lazarus who had been dead three days.
Do I believe that Jesus can resurrect a dead spiritual body that is rotting inside of a person? Yes, I do. Before coming to Christ we were all spiritually dead as hammers.
Should we pray for those who are spiritually dead? All the time, Jesus works miracles every single day.
I am writing this to you, so that you will have a better understanding of just what we are dealing with out there, in the world. I had never really given this topic much thought until reading about “spiritless” people last night and finally seeing the whole picture. This is my hope for you too. We often assume that people are built just like we are and that we should always treat each other as exact equals however, this is simply just not true. You need to know what you are looking at when you run across one of these human beings both for your safety, and to do God’s work most effectively. We are to be as wise as serpents and as innocent as lambs. Talk to these people, pray for these people and forgive them because they are only doing what is natural to them. Do not get angry with nor hate them, love them in a limited way. Above all, do not engage in the same activities they do or do the same things that they do, ruination and sin are all you will be rewarded with if you do.
