“He wanted to go to the Police Academy, he wanted to become a Cop…”
Christopher German, 20, was charged with with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious acts against children under the age of 14 in connection with two alleged groping incidents in San Leandro.
A suspect was charged Friday for allegedly fondling girls at Target and Walmart stores in San Leandro this week, incidents that happened just minutes apart and were caught on surveillance video, police said.
Christopher German, 20, of San Leandro was taken into custody Thursday at a San Mateo parking garage where he works. Alameda County prosecutors have charged him with two felony counts of lewd acts with a child.
In an interview with police, German admitted to grabbing the buttocks of both girls “because he had sexual urges and felt like he needed to act on them,” San Leandro police Detective Ali Khan wrote in a court affidavit. “He said he felt the rush of excitement after grabbing the buttocks of both children.”
German was spotted at 7:10 a.m. Thursday at a 7-Eleven store on Hesperian Boulevard in San Leandro by an off-duty Berkeley police community service officer who noticed that he matched the description of the suspect, McManus said.
During the alleged assaults, the suspect wore a black dress shirt and red tie. The community service officer saw the man dressed the same way, McManus said.
The community service officer took German’s picture and called police, but he had already left by the time officers arrived, McManus said. Soon, detectives identified the man and took him into custody at the parking garage on the 1400 block of Fashion Island Boulevard in San Mateo.
German had been living with relatives in San Leandro for the past six months and previously lived in Southern California, where an anonymous tipster also positively identified the suspect, McManus said. He has previous convictions unrelated to the offenses that led to his arrest, he said.
German approached two sisters at the Walmart at 15555 Hesperian Blvd. at 7:45 p.m. Monday before grabbing the buttocks of the older girl over her clothing and fleeing, authorities said.
Just 15 minutes later, he allegedly grabbed the buttocks of another girl at a nearby Target store at the Bayfair Center. In both cases, the girls’ mothers reported the incidents to store officials and police.
The incidents were caught on video, and a picture of the suspect was released by police.
San Leandro police say they have a person in custody for allegedly assaulting two young girls inside two different stores on Monday night.
Police credit surveillance pictures, television news and social media for helping them crack this case so quickly.
Investigators say the man wearing the same clothes was spotted Thursday morning, at a San Leandro 7-11 by an off-duty Berkeley community service officer.
“She saw a man in there dressed in a black dress shirt, black slacks and black shoes. as we reported last night. She immediately took cellphone pictures of that man and his car, called the San Leandro police department, but by the time officers got there, the man had already fled,”said San Leandro Police Lt. Robert McManus.
Investigators are convinced, he is the man shown in the store surveillance videos, first at a Walmart, then at a Target store Monday. It was in those two store where he allegedly groped two young victims within 15 minutes of each other.
“I do know that people in this, from my training and my experience,.that these people that have this desire to offend against children, will do so pretty much at all costs,” said McManus.
The suspect has been arrested on two counts of felony lewd and lascivious with a child. Police say he does have a criminal record, but not for any similar offenses.
